Rules & Requirements
Critical requirements from the official Philmont guidebook that affect your gear and planning.
Pack Weight Guidelines

Target 20–25 lbs base weight without food and water. Fully loaded pack should not exceed 25–30% of body weight. On trail with food and water expect 35–50 lbs. Philmont elevation means 20–35% less oxygen than sea level — every pound matters.

  • Bear bag pulley systems
  • Drones

Bear Bag — Everything Smellable

Food, toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, sunscreen, insect repellent, first aid kit — all go in the bear bag every night. Deodorant is prohibited entirely. Scented products must be applied well before dark so odors dissipate.

Clothing Rules

Avoid cotton — loses insulating value when wet, dries slowly. Wool and synthetics required at elevation. Long pants required for conservation, horseback riding, and pole climbing. Sleep clothes worn in sleeping bag only (bear protocol). Expect lows in the 30s at high elevations.

Water Requirements

Minimum 4 liters personal capacity at all times plus 2L extra for dry camps. All water from all sources must be purified — Micropur tablets issued. Drink 6–8 quarts per day at altitude.

Itinerary 12-10 Specifics

Dry camps: Day 7 (Comanche Peak) and Day 10 (Devils Wash Basin). Carry water from Clear Creek and Ute Gulch respectively.

Burn areas: Crosses Ute Park Fire Recovery Zone — prepare for sun exposure and exposed terrain.

Conservation: Beaubien, 7:30am, Forest Fuel Reduction. Long pants required.

Max elevation: 11,736 ft. Aggressive hydration first 2–3 days.
